Putting Parents

and Students

A Proven Education Leader for School Choice, Local Control and Quality Education

Quality education means focusing on classroom teaching and learning, and on recruiting and retaining the very best teachers for Arizona’s kids.

I intend to be a proactive Superintendent both in managing the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) and using the office as a “bully pulpit” to advocate and work tirelessly for a high-quality education to help every child reach their full potential, regardless of where they live or their socio-economic circumstances. I also intend to make ADE fully transparent, responsive and accountable to parents, educators and taxpayers.

We need a superintendent who will be a strong and credible advocate for parents, teachers and students, and who will direct more dollars for classroom teaching and learning instead of spending precious taxpayer funds on expensive travel and lawsuits.  As the Judge told the incumbent when she went to court on her lawsuit against the State Board of Education, "Let's get back to the business of education."

I am a proven education leader with high-level executive experience in the private, public and nonprofit sectors.  I've served my country and community as an Army veteran, police officer, school board president and U.S. Congressman.  For over three decades, I've walked my talk on expanding educational opportunity, parental school choice and local control of K-12 education.

I've shown the ability to forge consensus to get things done for my constituents, the people I represent and serve, as I did as a Congressman.  I will build strong working relationships with the governor, members of the state legislature, and my colleagues on the "State Board of Education.  I will restore credibility and trust in the constitutional office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.  And, as the Trump Administration and Education Secretary DeVos return responsibility and dollars for K-12 education back to the states, I'm ideally prepared to lead and oversee that transition in Arizona.

As the leader of the Arizona Department of Education, I will demonstrate the integrity, competence and leadership we should expect from our state's schools chief.  I will work every day to strengthen our public education system by increasing student learning and improving our under-performing schools, and by closing the achievement gap on the part of disadvantaged students.  And I will strive to be a Superintendent that every Arizona family can trust knowing I will always put the future of Arizona and our kids first!
